The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Multi-Generational Family Vacation (Without the Stress)

Planning a trip with your parents, kids, siblings, in-laws, and maybe even a baby in tow? You’re not alone—and you’re definitely not crazy. Multi-generational family vacations are one of the fastest-growing trends in travel, and for good reason: they’re the rare chance to make shared memories across generations. But let’s be honest… they’re also a lot to coordinate.

Between different travel styles, budgets, schedules, and ages, it’s no wonder families come to us feeling overwhelmed before they even pick a destination. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right planning (and a little help from someone who does this every day), you can actually enjoy the process—and the trip.

Here’s your ultimate guide to making it happen.

Step 1: Pick the Right Destination for Everyone

Not every destination works for a group of 8–15 people ranging from toddlers to retirees. The best multi-gen trips balance adventure with relaxation, and offer something for every age group.

What to look for:

  • Short travel times or direct flights (especially for groups with young kids or older adults)
  • Multiple activity options nearby (think: beach + town + day excursions)
  • Walkability or transportation ease

Top destinations we love for multi-gen trips:

  • Florida Keys (perfect mix of water fun + space to unwind)
  • Oahu, Hawaii (cultural sites, beach days, and family condos)
  • All-inclusive resorts in Mexico or the Caribbean (built-in food, fun, and fewer decisions)

Step 2: Choose Accommodations That Work for Real Families

Hotel rooms are fine—until you need five of them. When it comes to multi-gen travel, where you stay matters a lot.

What to prioritize:

  • Multi-bedroom suites or villas so families have privacy but still feel connected
  • On-site activities (kids clubs, spas, golf, etc.)
  • Flexible dining—especially places that don’t require reservations every night

One tip? Don’t stress if everyone’s budget isn’t identical. With the right property, we can often mix room types within the same resort so everyone stays together but at a comfort level that works for them.

Step 3: Balance the Schedule (and Expectations)

You don’t need to do everything together, and you definitely don’t need to pack every day full. Some of the best multi-gen moments happen over breakfast on the balcony or while watching the kids dance at the resort show.

Keep in mind:

  • Plan 1–2 anchor activities everyone enjoys
  • Build in downtime (nap breaks, pool afternoons, early nights)
  • Consider splitting up occasionally—golf for the adults, splash pad for the littles

The goal? Everyone gets the trip they need, while still connecting together.

Step 4: Talk Budget Early (and Kindly)

Money talk doesn’t have to be awkward. In fact, getting clear on budgets early can prevent stress later—especially when not everyone in the group is footing the same bill.

We often help families by:

  • Offering tiered room options at the same resort
  • Splitting group payments behind the scenes so no one’s chasing down Venmo
  • Suggesting group excursions with per-person pricing to make budgeting easier

When everyone knows what to expect up front, the planning process runs smoother for everyone.

Step 5: Bring in a Pro (That’s Where We Come In)

Let’s be real: group travel involves a lot of moving parts. Flights. Transfers. Rooms. Activities. Dietary needs. Special celebrations. And when you’re also managing your regular life? It’s… a lot.

This is exactly what we do at Bright Life Travel Co.

We help families:

  • Choose the right destination for their group size, needs, and budget
  • Find resorts or villas that truly fit multi-gen travelers
  • Build customized itineraries that reduce decision fatigue
  • Handle all the logistics, confirmations, and last-minute changes

You can have a seamless, joy-filled, well-organized vacation without carrying the entire mental load. (Yes, even if you’re the family’s designated planner.)

Planning a trip is so much more than clicking “Book Now.”

Behind every itinerary is a whole lot of research, collaboration, and problem-solving.

✨ Comparing resorts that actually fit your family.
✨ Sorting through room categories and fine print.
✨ Coordinating flights, transfers, excursions, and dining.
✨ Keeping up with supplier changes and promotions.
✨ Making sure every detail works together before you ever pack a suitcase.

From the outside, it might look like we’re just sitting around with our laptops.

In reality, we’re building vacations that are designed around your family, your priorities, and your budget.

That’s the difference between booking a trip…
and planning one.

We love getting to do the behind-the-scenes work so you can focus on looking forward to the fun. 💛
I was going through video last weekend to find content to post and came across this gem. Here’s what’s going on —

A few of our advisors were filming some content while another teammate was off getting new headshots.

As soon as they spotted her across the bridge, they stopped what they were doing and started cheering.

“YES GIRL!”

Clapping.
Laughing.
Celebrating her for no reason other than they were excited to see her.

Nobody planned it.
Nobody asked them to.
That’s just who they are.

Moments like this remind me that the best teams aren’t built through policies or team meetings.

They’re built when people genuinely want to see each other succeed.

I believe that’s one of the reasons our clients have the experience they do.

When one advisor learns something new, everyone benefits.
When someone discovers an incredible resort, they share it.
When someone needs help, there’s always another advisor willing to jump in.

We don’t compete with each other.

We cheer for each other.

And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Because at the end of the day, we’re not just building a travel agency.

We’re building a place where great people get to do great work together. 🤍
Research trips aren’t vacations.

They’re one of the ways we become better advisors.

On our recent trip to Mexico, our team toured around eight different resorts in just a few days. That meant walking room categories, testing the beaches, checking out the pools, eating at the restaurants, and paying attention to all the little details you won’t find on a resort website.

By the end of the trip, we weren’t saying, “This resort is the best.”

We were saying things like...

✔️ This is perfect for families with young kids.
✔️ We’d recommend this one for couples celebrating something special.
✔️ This is a great fit for multi-generational groups.
✔️ This one offers incredible value for the price.

That’s the difference.

The best resort isn’t the fanciest one. It’s the one that’s the best fit for your vacation.

We invest in visiting destinations firsthand so when you ask for a recommendation, it’s based on real experience, not just brochures and reviews.

Because finding the right fit is what turns a good vacation into a great one.
Interviewing our sweet @traveldesignbyerin to hear her biggest travel mistake.

If you know Erin, you know she’s so organized and has all the answers. It makes her an amazing travel advisor. It’s nice to know she’s also a human 😂🤪

Also, first interview so if you stay til the end you can hear @travelbykristinh fumble on the mic.
We don’t know that exactly 87% of memories from travel are food memories, but it seems pretty accurate to us.
Just girls who needed a night or two to be silly. 🥰😂

So lucky to have an agency full of friends who don’t take themselves too seriously.

Anyone want to see a part 2 with the Karen wigs? We may or may not have more footage.
Most people see the destination photos.

The resort tours.
The ocean views.
The pretty hotel rooms.

What they don’t see are the hours spent sitting around tables like this one.

Talking through client experiences.

Sharing what’s working (and what’s not).

Learning from each other’s successes and mistakes.

Building better systems.

Comparing notes on resorts, destinations, suppliers, and travel trends.

As travel advisors, continuing education isn’t optional. The industry changes constantly, and the more we learn, the better we can guide our clients.

One of my favorite parts of our Bright Life Travel retreat wasn’t actually the resort.

It was watching our team collaborate, challenge ideas, share knowledge, and leave with pages of notes on how we can serve our clients even better.

Because the best travel experiences don’t happen by accident.

They’re built on expertise, experience, and a whole lot of behind-the-scenes work that most people never see.

And honestly? That’s exactly how we like it. ❤️

What you see is the vacation.

What we’re focused on is everything that makes it unforgettable.
